Didelphis virginiana

--Didelphis virginiana, the Virginia opossum (a mammal)
--Diospyros virginiana, the common persimmon (an angiosperm)
--Pinus virginiana, the Virginia pine (a gymnosperm)

--Gazella cuvieri, Cuvier's gazelle (a mammal)
--Dryolimnas cuvieri, the white-throated rail (a bird)
--Orestias cuvieri, a South American pupfish (a fish)

In these examples, the species that share a species epithet are not related. Those in the first set all occur in, and are named for, the U.S. state of Virginia; those in the second set are all named in honor of the early naturalist Georges Cuvier.

Note, however, that the combination of genus name and species epithet -- the binomial species name -- must be unique. That is, Pinus virginiana refers to one and only one species.
